  1. Lance could have wiped the mountain with Marco!! You are obviously no sportsman!! I regularly ride hard and depending on the situation I have gifted wins to buddies. What goes around comes around. Just because you can win a club race every week does not mean you should, spread that feeling around I say. Marco Pantani was a great rider and I think he contributed greatly to our sport. I don’t think one stage of one race should get blown out of proportion.

  4. pantani was at 10 min 34 and he wanted win this stage but he was not well prepared for the tour,he improved constantly et became a target in the end of the tour in courchevel and morzine stage.Armstrong wanted pantani as friend

  5. I must disagree with the statement ‘Lance gifted Pantani the win’
These are two great rivals, Pantani clearly made Lance do the work, Lance tried to break away as did Pantani. For Lance to give this stage away is either B.S. or total disrespect!!!! both for Pantani and Mont Ventoux. ALSO NO SPORTSMAN GIFTS A WIN TO ANYONE!!! I believe that Lance’s legs could’nt fight back when Pantani kicked. you can disagree all you like but LANCE IS ARROGANT so he would never give a stage win away !!!!!

  9. A 14mn advantages on a riders who had jacked his hematocrit to 55-60% that could only imply that Lance doped too, but we know it with EPO found in his 1999 samples. Just read Ashenden interview on velocitynation website.

  10. hey, in this tour pantani was 14 minutes behind armstrong. in this stage as well, he didnt have to even look at pantani, no treath in GC. he rode with him up and gave him the stage.

  12. I agree completely: Two amazing athletes, fighting a brilliant battle.

  13. @Festool4 At 4:20 it looks like Lance tries to put Pantani off his wheel, he definitely ups the pace and does a lot of that classic Lance ‘look behind’. He gets a bit of a gap but Pantani never lets him get away. Plus everyone knows you don’t lead out the yellow jersey, you always make the leader do the work so Pantani had every right to let Lance lead a lot of the way up (if he was ‘letting’ him). Either way it was an insane ride by both of them.

    Comment by NullUnit2 — February 28, 2010 @ 12:24 am

  14. The way I see it, Pantani just had a better strategy: this is drafting 101. I suspect Lance thought he could just power past him. Clearly he underestimated how strong Pantani was. Any guy tough enough to ride a pink bike, wearing a pink outfit should be taken seriously. :)

  15. Pantani won after being behind Amstrong’ s wheel the whole climb… bad point for Pantani..

  16. oh.

    Comment by stringcatt — February 28, 2010 @ 2:27 am

  17. He’s out of saddle the whole way to keep Pantani from catching him in the General Classification cause if Pantani gets away Armstrong loses the Yellow Jersey only at the end did he let Pantani win since it won’t hurt him

    Comment by beastmanR — February 28, 2010 @ 3:04 am

  18. dopato PANTANI? You are stupid…amstrong..i hate

    Comment by maxrefree — February 28, 2010 @ 3:50 am

  19. @stringcatt

It looked that way, he didn’t make any effort at the end.

    Comment by allgoo19 — February 28, 2010 @ 4:18 am

  20. Armstrong says he let Pantani win hehe, is that why he’s out of the saddle nearly all the way? Pantani looks as though he’s 80 years old. Could his ears be used as an advantage with a strong tail wind? Let them dope ’cause this year’s TOF was a drag and almost as boring as NASCAR..

    Comment by stringcatt — February 28, 2010 @ 4:19 am

  21. If that’s so how do you explain the performance of the Ethiopians and Kenyans? They’ll be is the TOF someday, too.

  23. A hater? are u gangster tripping on too many m&m albums, holla, lol.
Contador is a magnolia paint job or a warm glass of water in comparison with the great characters of the tour like pantani and the cannibal.

    Comment by jasondo23 — February 28, 2010 @ 5:41 am

  24. @ jasondo23. Right, because Alberto Contador is definitely from America. Stop being a hater.

    Comment by GTIFan07 — February 28, 2010 @ 6:17 am

  25. A verdade e uma so´o Armstrong tentou largar o Pantani pelo menos umas tres vezes e não conseguiu, em 1999 Pantani teria colocado uns 3min em cima dele.
